Yorkies do best eating hard Iams food which helps keep there gums and teeth clean.  You also will want to brush the gums and teeth of your baby to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Many people will at least wipe the gums and teeth with a gauze pad or dental wipe you can purchase at any of the store or online.   Another treat that helps with this is Greenies.  They are all natural with no preservatives, help fight bad breathe and the Yorkies love them.  Having milk bones and chewy toys also helps the overall health of gums and teeth.  It's important to start brushing their teeth at a young age, grooming, and clipping their nails.  Starting young gets them use to it and becomes no big deal when it's time for grooming.  Many people can easily learn to groom there own yorkie, it is really not hard at all.

   Since you have found your way to this page you already appreciate how special the Yorkshire Terrier breed is.  A Yorkie isn't for every family however.  They do not like to spend much time alone more than any other breed.  They get completely devoted and attached to their owners and want to do everything with you.  A Yorkie is not for families with rowdy youngsters either.  Their tiny size leaves them vulnerable to small children thinking they are stuffed animals and squeezing them to hard.  This is most dangerous to their tummies and can fatally injure your Yorkie.    Yorkies have nice long lives and the decision to add one or two (trust me you can't have just one, they are addicting !! )  as part of your life should well though out, this is a serious commitment to the Yorkie.  You must be able to afford monthly treatments of tick and flea repellent (Frontline ) and monthly heartworm medication heartgaurd or interceptor (I use interceptor).  Your little Yorkie should be regularly groomed professionally or by yourself.  You must keep any wetness or discharge clipped away from their eye areas and keep their teeth and gums cleaned.  Puppy kindegarden is strongly advised and also continued training classes are fantastic for both you and your little furry friend !!
  This is a very sought after breed and someone will steal your Yorkie if given the chance.  A Yorkie is happiest when he/she has a fenced in protected area to run free and play in, never being left in the yard alone.  Coyote's, Fisher Cat's, fox, eagles, hawks, owls, etc. are all dangerous preditors to the Yorkie. 
   Yorkies are hypo allergenic (they don't shed because they have gorgeous hair like a human not fur ) highly intelligent, cuddly, loyal, and very playful.  A Yorkie can bring sunshine to anyone's life.

   Please educate yourself with dog training shows and books.  It's a great idea to enroll your yorkie in dog training classes and you'll probably learn more than the doggie about the best way to communicate with your yorkie.  It's alot of fun.
